How to determine what type of floppy drive I have?

Question:

How to determine what type of floppy drive I have?

Answer:

All computers toady are either shipped with no floppy disk drive or have a standard 3.5" floppy disk drive. If you are trying to determine the type of floppy drive installed in the computer it is likely that the computer either contains a 3.5" and/or a 5.25" floppy disk drive.

In some cases the computer may have an Imation Super Drive or LS120 disk drive or an Iomega Zip drive, additional information about these drives can be physically found on the front, top or bottom of the disk drives.

Reasoning:

Product listing or specifications

If you are trying to list all the specific information about your computer, specifying "Generic 3.5" (or 5.25") Floppy Disk Drive" is always acceptable.

Drivers or installation

If you are trying to determine what drivers to install or setup the floppy disk drive with your computer operating system, any "Generic Floppy Disk Drive" or "Standard floppy disk controller" should be sufficient.

Additional information about installing a computer floppy disk drive can be found on document CH000414.

Replacement or repair

If you are trying to determine the type of floppy disk drive because it needs replaced or repaired it is recommended that the drive simply be replaced with another generic floppy disk drive.

Additional buying tips on buying a computer floppy disk drive can be found here.
