I downloaded a video but I can only hear it and not see it.

Question:

I downloaded a video but I can only hear it and not see it.

Answer:

This issue may be caused by any of the below reasons.

Codec issue

This type of an issue is almost always caused by a codec issue. A movie may be created to utilize a certain codec to allow the file to be smaller and more portable. However, in order for the movie file to be played in the media player it must also have the codec installed.

If the location of where you downloaded the file does not contain a link to the download for the codec we suggest you view our codec dictionary definition for additional information and links to codec downloads.

Many times this particular issue is caused when the computer does not have the required DivX or XviD codec.

Video type is not supported

In some cases certain video files require different types of video players. Verify the video format you are attempting to view is supported with your player and/or try viewing the file with a different player.

See document CH000852 for additional information about viewing movies in Microsoft Windows.

File is corrupt

If you've verified the above steps but are still unable to view the video, it is possible that the video is corrupt or bad. Try downloading the video file again.

Additional information:

  • See document CH000682 for additional information about why you may be able to see the video but do not get any sound.
  • See document CH000852 for additional information about viewing movies in Microsoft Windows.
