known as edit, edit mode is a software ability that allows the
modification of files. For example, MS-DOS edit command is a software
program with the edit mode ability to edit and modify files on the
computer. Some software programs will have different modes, usually
"view" and "edit"; when in the "view
mode" the user can only look at the file; however, in "edit
mode" the user can view and edit the file. Often this is done
for files that are shared between multiple users on a network.
