Hidden files

One or more files that exist on a computer but don't appear when listing the files. For example, in MS-DOS, when doing the dir command without any additional switches, you cannot see hidden files. However, using the "attrib" or "dir /ah" command enables you to view any hidden files in the current directory.

Note: It is important to realize that files can also be hidden using a software program or other commands. In order to view these types of files you would need access to the program and/or a password to have the program unlock the files so they can be viewed. Files may also have rights set to them that allow or prevent users from viewing the files. In order to view these type of files you must be given the appropriate rights by the administrator or super user.

  • Additional information and help with the MS-DOS attrib command can be found here.
  • Additional information about how to hide a file in MS-DOS can be found in document CH00009.
  • See  document CH000516 for additional information about viewing hidden files in Windows.
